Cedar Cycling Unsale for Matt Barton Fund

Just caught wind of this tonight. Cedar Cycling will be having a one day unsale : 20% of revenues will go to Matt Barton’s Hospital Fund.

"On June 11th 2012 Mat Barton suffered an accident during the Portland Short Track single-speed bicycle race that has left him paralyzed from the chest down. Mat has undergone surgery to stabilize his spine, but the doctors believe the paralysis is likely permanent.

Those of you who know Mat will attest to what a wonderful person he is. Always wearing a huge infectious smile, and doling out his own unique sense of comedy. Mat makes fast friends wherever he goes, and is always willing to help people out – even those he has just met. We have all been made richer by having him in our lives. Mat’s road to recovery will be long and difficult, and now it is our turn to help support him and his wife Jessica in their time of need.

Please use the PayPal link
on this page to give what money you can to help pay for Mat’s treatment and recovery. Our goal is to raise $50,000. Even with health insurance, there are significant out-of-pocket costs for both Mat’s treatment, and his lost time away from work. Your help means the world here."

So if you’ve been in need of any incredible jerseys, base layers, or any essentials, BUY SOMETHING!

BART Bike Thief Caught

If you've had your bike stolen at a BART station, most notably the 24th St station, now would be a good time to check in with them. Brett Major, 47, was recently nabbed while trying to lift another bike. "BART Police Officers booked Major at San Francisco County Jail for burglary, theft, possession of burglary tools, and an outstanding warrant originating from Alameda County. A subsequent search of Majors’ home turned up seven bicycle frames and parts, which BART Police believe to be stolen. BART Police Investigators are looking for the owners to identify and claim their property." Thank you, Bart Police. Seriously, it's nice to know you're there watching out.

East Coast Messenger Stage Race 2012

I just got my invite to 2012 East Coast Messenger Stage Race from Austin Horse and I'm excited to see it's continued success. Between KLIFGT2012 the following weekend and then Interbike after that, September's already a fuckin crazy month.

 The Format:
Point to point open course stage race, from DC to Boston. All stages except prologue begin at 9 am and finish in next city. Time keeping kept by google voice text to win. Entire event entry fee $25 suggested (pay what you want).

The Rules:
Teams of 3. If you don’t have a team you are welcome to post to the event wall or elsewhere for partners. Individuals will be teamed up at registration. On your honor, no mobility aids. No public transit, no buddy cars, no skitching. If you find yourself unable to complete a stage you may resort to public transit or the sag wagon but will be out of GC contention. If your abandonment appears tactical you may not be awarded subsequent stage victories.
All participants must have phones. This is essential for timekeeping. If your phone is dead at the finish, you may not be awarded the time at which you came in. Furthermore at least one racer per team must have a smartphone.
The Good Stuff:
This is some of the most classic and adventurous bike racing you can possibly do. Check out the voice logs on ECMSR.org if you don’t believe me, everyone seriously enjoys this race. Once again I will be trying to find housing in every city for all racers and providing a vehicle for racers’ gear. Hopefully once again food will be racers only expense.
The Schedule:

September 2nd, Sunday:
Registration, orientation, & Prologue
Washington DC

September 3rd, Monday:
DC to Baltimore

September 4th, Tuesday:
Baltimore to Philadelphia

September 5th, Wednesday:
Philadelphia to NYC

September 6th, Thursday:

Velo Cult : Book Volume 1

There are a lot of impressive bike photographers out there, and the ones I have most admired are those who have shot for Velo Cult. That's where I heard of Matt Lingo from RecFail when he was shooting Beardsley doing whip skids through puddles. So when I was cruising through their site now that they've moved to Portland, this is one book I need to buy. Check it out here. And when they go back in stock, get one of their cool ass patches.

Los Angeles : Santa Barbara to Santa Monica Alleycat

Orange 20 has a great write up on Hern's "Santa Barbara to Santa Monica" race this past weekend. I remember participating last year, and it took me close to 5 hours for 92 miles on a track bike by my lonesomes. That sucked. "On June 16th Hern organized a brutal race from Santa Barabara to Santa Monica. Over 30 racers showed up to race 80 miles down the Southern California coast. Jon Budinoff took 1st place finishing the race in under 3 hours and 20 minutes. Thomas Wood finished in 2nd place, Robby from Engine N.11 in 3rd. Bud Abile finished 5th but he won the Fixed gear category. Awesome race! Hope everyone who participated had lots of fun."
